Thursday 10th June 2010

After a long days sight seeing yesterday you would think I would have rested by the pool today.  You would be wrong.

My mother and I got up fairly early, put on some nice 'frocks', picked up a friend of my mothers and went into Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, to a Womans Guild meeting.  After saying hello to the people I meet here every year and being told I look like my mother, we sat down to listen to the speaker.  She was a Canadian who volunteers for a medical charity and had been helping in Haiti after the earthquake at the beginning of the year.  It was a very interesting and enlightening talk along with photos showing all the devastation.  After the talk they hold a raffle and I managed to win a prize and chose a bottle of Spanish wine rather than the soaps or knitted something or other!

When we drove home it was cloudy and we noticed the cars coming towards us had there headlights on.  That usually means heavy rain, but this is June in Cyprus - it doesnt rain.  We actually had to drive through some and when we dropped off my mothers friend at her house she grabbed a plastic bag to put over her hair to keep it dry as she ran into her house!

When we got back home it was still raining and were told they had seen lightening and heard thunder.  I dont go to Cyprus for that kind of weather.  In fact it rained for most of the day and because of the threat of lightening all the tv's and computers were turned off.  We were back to the days of entertaining oneself, which proved quite difficult.   We did try to play table tennis, but the ball kept getting wet when it was missed and rolled out into the rain - surprisingly!

In the evening, when it had stopped raining, we went to a small tavern for dinner.  It is quite difficult to feed my kids unless you are at a fast food place, so this wasnt an easy meal time.  Luckily they love the local cheese called hulomi (spell check doesnt like that word), so that is always a stand by.  It was a pleasant evening and meal and the rest of the evening was spent catching up on the world in front of the tv.
